Here is the best guide to electrical boiler installations and common problems:
As far as our central heating systems are concerned, well, most of us don’t really pay them much thought, as we simply expect them to work at all times. Many people take their central heating systems for granted, which is why electric boiler installations companies are currently enjoying such a productive spell of business, as people are simply not respecting their boilers and central heating systems, and are then wondering why things have gone so wrong.
In regards to boilers and central heating, especially during the winter, when things are working as they should, things are pretty great, but if you suddenly find yourself experiencing problems, well, life all of a sudden becomes miserable, and we realise just how heavily we rely on our boilers.
Boilers can be pretty temperamental, especially older boilers, which again, is why more and more people are choosing to have electric boiler installation carried out at their properties. There are times when boilers can be working perfectly fine, when all of a sudden, without any warning, they may break down for no reason whatsoever. What’s more, as boilers are used so much more in the winter, nearly 90% of all boiler breakdowns occur during the winter.
Some issues can be addressed and resolved yourself, whilst others must be addressed via trained and qualified electricians. Whatever the problem may be, knowing what it is can be half of the battle, so to make life a little easier, here are a few common boiler problems and how they can be resolved.
Loss of heat and/or hot water – One of the most common problems associated with boilers and central heating systems, is when they lose heat and/or hot water. All of a sudden, radiators that were once nice and hot, may find themselves freezing cold. Water from the hot tap, which should again be coming out at a very high temperature, may instead come out stone cold, but why is this? Well, in reality, there are a number of potential causes, including airlocks, broken diaphragms, loss of pressure, thermostat issues, and more besides. If the pressure is too low, you can take a look at the reading on the display and see where it is, and if it is too low, you can simply twist the knob and top up the pressure until it reaches the optimal level (which you should know before you do this yourself). In any other cases, new parts will be required, so you will be better off hiring professionals.
Drips and leaks – Another very, very common problem associated with boilers, new and old, is when they develop leaks and drips. Sometimes the boilers themselves may develop these drips and leaks, which could be the result of a hole somewhere, or something may have come loose. Other times, however, somewhere in your central heating system, or in your water pipes, the pipes themselves, or the radiators, may have developed a small hole and could be losing water that way.
The obvious thing to do is inspect everywhere yourself and to see whether or not you can find any leaking water, although if your boiler is losing pressure and is having to be topped up regularly I.E once a week, or even more frequently, again, this is probably due to a leak somewhere. Sometimes leaks will seal themselves with general sludge and detritus in your system, but more often than not, you will need to hire a local electrician or plumber and let them take care of things for you.
Odd noises – Some central heating systems, especially older ones, can make some pretty odd noises, which can be disturbing, especially in the dead of night. Don’t worry however, if you do hear an odd whistling, banging, or gurgling noise, it isn’t the bogeyman, but it is a problem with your boiler and central heating system. Usually, this problem is a result of air being in the system, or it could be a sign that the pump is about to fail.
If your boiler is making a whistling noise, this is known as kittling, due to the fact that it sounds like a kettle that is about to boil. Whatever the noise may be, you will need to speak to an expert and have them come out and diagnose the problem before rectifying any issues you may be having.
Cold radiators – If your radiators are cold, or are barely getting warm, this is a fairly common problem, and it could be caused by an airlock, or by sludge in the system, that is basically blocking the pipes and preventing hot water from flowing as it should. You should ideally bleed your radiators with the bleed key every so often and see if that makes a difference, but if not, the rads may need replacing, or your system will need desludging to allow the hot water to flow freely as it should.
